As some of you know, Baby J is quite the TV Addict! I’ve been trying to get her to kick the habit, but it is tough, especially since she’s learnt how to operate the TV and VCD player and put in her favourite discs.

When she wakes up in the morning she usually asks “Mum, Nemo please?” If I say “no”, she’ll put her face really near to my face, hold my cheeks and ask “how about Dora mum? How about Barney mum? Please” and if I say “no”, she’ll just go and try to switch it on herself, at which point I usually intercept by carrying her downstairs. I usually hate this part, coz she'll use her new found tantrum techniques (screaming and kicking) to protest.

Downstairs we have a baby gate to prevent her from going up. Well, this little “rat” has found a way to escape and climb upstairs on her own! She's found a gap wide enough for her, between the railing and the stairs. She can squeeze through that hole in a really quick time after the numerous practices she's had!

I’d call her to come down and she’d just ignore all my calls. I’d hear the glass door of the TV cabinet open *clang…*, some buttons being pushed …. And sometimes the CD doesn’t work (coz they’ve been “abused” by her! J) and she’ll call out “It’s spoil mum, it’s spoil!”

Then I hear more clanging, buttons pushing…vcd’s being thrown about…and then music…at which point she’ll call out “it’s Dora, YAY! It’s working YAY!.” Too Happy 2She usually says the YAY with both hands up in the air, followed by a little twist. Haha…

I climb upstairs…and as expected, she’d be sitted on the sofa, eyes GLUED to the TV, mouth wide opened….and some laughter here and there when she gets tickled, and if she feels like it, a little dance in front of the TV too.

So ok, today, I’ve resorted to putting all the CD’s HIGH up, and I have to find a way to cover the hole! . Baby J....you make mama work hard!! haha...

  3. Hey Hearts,

It's your old friend in NY here! There has been some studies done by specialists that kids who watch lots of TV or play lots computer games are prone to have ADD or ADHD. When I was in NH running the group home, almost all of the kids have ADD of some type. Most of them were neglected, and their parents frequently use TV as nannies.

It is not so much the content of the program, but the flashes, quick movements and multi-colors causes the kids to be highly stimulated. When they are put in a confined quiet classroom, they will get into trouble with focusing.

I need to find some articles about it for you when I have a moment!!

    Take care,
    HT

It will be difficult, and you should be successful..after a whole load of tantrums and kickings.....best of luck :) !!Boy,can they scream...wonder how those little throats can take out such shrills .....;)

  5. You have two precocious, wonderful children, Hearts. I must admit I am amused at how J takes her cheeks into her hands! LOL!

Thanks for your words of encouragement and your prayers. I won't lie - I am having a hard time. That is to be expected, though.

    Bless you, g

  7. Hello Hearts,

Little children are able to find their way through, around, & out of anything. That is why they are so cute and so much fun. Just remember that one of these days in the far future, they will have their own children. Payback is rough:)

Instant gratification is the bane of today. There is an old saying by Benjamin Franklin, "Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy & wise." In his day they didn't have all the electronic games (another current addiction) and TV. If they had he probably would have said something like, "Late to bed, early to rise makes a man broke, blind & dead." The lack of courtesy and common sense today is decreasing the intelligence of people. OK computers fit in that category BUT it is how they are used that matters.

    Have a great weekend.

    Peace, Love, & Blessings.
